FOX Upfronts: ‘Glee’, ‘New Girl’, & …Britney Spears?

15 May

Demi Lovato and LA Reid arriving at the Wollman Rink in Central Park for the FOX Upfronts after party.

After kicking off Upfronts week on Sunday night by hitting up some agency parties, it was go-time on Monday afternoon when the FOX Upfronts presentation hit the Beacon Theater. While I skipped the actual presentation and opted to hit up the after party at Wollman Rink instead, sadly I was not the only one who had that stroke of genius idea. I got to Wollman Rink very shortly after 4pm – when the FOX Upfronts presentation at Beacon Theater started – and it was already jam packed with fans. Every year he FOX Upfronts get crazier and crazier as far as the fans go and I have to admit that after this year I don’t think I will be attending next year. I lucked out back in 2010 when ‘Glee’ was first becoming a huge success and they basically owned the  Upfronts presentation when I met almost the entire cast, but every year since I haven’t really had much luck in meeting anyone from the network so I think it may be time to call it quits.

Zooey Deschanel signing autographs for fans outside of Wollman Rink.

I have to admit that FOX wasn’t a complete and total bust for me though. I got to meet Lamorne Morris from ‘New Girl’ which was exciting considering that just the previous night I had met Max Greenfield and Hannah Simone. Zooey Deschanel even came out to sign some autographs and take some pictures which is such a rare, rare thing for her to do so it was a treat watching all of her fans get to meet her! I know so many people who have tried to meet her over the years and have asked for pictures and she has turned them down, so to see that maybe she is easing up a bit as far as fan interaction goes is pretty cool. Speaking of people who don’t usually stop for fans, in the three years I have been doing Upfronts I have never seen Lea Michele sign a single autograph let alone take a picture with anyone – and yesterday she did both! I had heard that she was becoming a bit more accessible at events and the like, so to see it happen live and in-person was definitely awesome. I know that she made a lot of ‘Glee’ fans very happy yesterday!

‘Glee’s Naya Rivera & ‘Fringe’s Joshua Jackson share a golf cart back to their cars following the FOX Upfronts after party.

Some other exciting things that I got to witness at the FOX Upfronts after party were Naya Rivera and Joshua Jackson introducing themselves and then sharing a cab back to their separate cars, as well as ‘Glee’-king out over Darren Criss and Chris Colfer arriving on the same golf cart. This means absolutely nothing (seriously ‘Glee’ fans – they were just sharing a golf cart like everyone else had!), but it’s exciting seeing your favorite TV couples together in-person! Oh, and this isn’t a big deal or anything, but… Britney Spears was there. FOR REAL. Britney arrived with 3 golf carts full of security and her team, but didn’t stop for any fans. Someone told me that she waved and blew a kiss or two, but I didn’t see that with my own eyes so who knows. Queen B did not stay very long, maybe thirty minutes tops, but things were a lot calmer when she left as you can see in my video. Long after Britney was gone an Escalade drove into the park on the walkway all the way up to Wollman Rink and we thought she might be back, but nope – it was Kevin Bacon. How is it possible that Britney Spears can take a golf cart like everyone else on FOX, but Kevin Bacon needs an Escalade?! Crazytown.

Lamorne Morris from ‘New Girl’ stopped to take a quick picture before hitting the FOX party at Wollman Rink.

Kicking Off Upfronts Week!

14 May

Max Greenfield & Hannah Simone from FOX’s “New Girl” joined me for a group picture Sunday night at Lavo!

The very last exciting major celebrity-filled event in New York of Spring is Network Upfronts week. For those of you who don’t know what that is, all of your favorite television networks like CBS, NBC, ABC, & CW come together in New York City to show off all their new endeavors and their most popular casts. Apparently it also has something to do with gaining advertisers, but to me it really just sounds like an excuse to brag a lot for the press. Not that there is anything wrong with that or that I would complain about it considering what a fruitful opportunity it is for my friends and I to meet our favorite TV stars.

“The Client List” star Colin Egglesfield & I last night.

Something else that happens during Upfronts week is that every agency who has ever repped anyone on any TV show ever throws a party to celebrate their clients. This is also an extremely fruitful opportunity for my friends and I which was proven to be true last night at the UTA agency party held at Lavo. When Hannah Simone showed up for the party I was so excited I literally stuttered in her face while asking her for a picture. The worst part is that after she agreed and I turned to hand my camera to a friend so he could take the picture for me, there was Hannah’s fellow “New Girl” star Max Greenfield – I gasped in his face. Like, if I had been any closer to him when I gasped as hard as I gasped I might have swallowed his face. Seriously. Max laughed and I asked him for a picture as well, so when he agreed Hannah offered to jump in for a group picture and, voila!

Edi Gathegi & I outside Lavo. Edi will be on your TV’s come this Fall!

Also in attendance at the UTA party were Colin Egglesfield who I know only from “Something Borrowed” but is now on Lifetime’s “The Client List. Colin was very nice and asked for my name before shaking my hand and introducing himself. I always think it’s really funny when you ask a celebrity for your picture and they introduce themselves to you like you don’t know who they are. Another random sighting was “Twilight” star Edi Gathegi. Apparently Edi has a new show coming to ABC this fall called “Red Van Man” which is exciting news for him!

Naya Rivera from “Glee” was super sweet at the UTA party last night.

Last but certainly not least, Naya Rivera from “Glee” was one of the few to close out the party, and she looked stunning in a purple cocktail mini dress. The first time I ever met Naya Rivera was outside the Beacon Theater at the 2012 FOX Upfronts. It was right after it had been announced that Naya Rivera and Heather Morris would become season regulars on the series, so it was really exciting to meet the both of them then! Naya was super sweet and just as stunning then as she was last night, and I was really happy to see that she hasn’t changed a bit.

Not to brag, but considering Upfronts hadn’t even started yet I think I had a pretty good kick-off last night. I am looking forward to what else the week will bring!

2012 Tribeca Film Festival: What I saw and what I missed!

1 May

Since 2007 it has become an annual tradition for me to volunteer as part of the Tribeca Crew at the Tribeca Film Festival. I have to say that every year I grow more and more excited for it’s arrival in the spring, and every year my expectations are exceeded as far as films, events, and celebrity encounters go. This year was probably my most successful and professional year working for the festival, and I also saw the most films this year. I was smart enough to do a nice, long in-depth review of the Film Guide before the festival started so I could make a list of things I wanted to see in advance. While I didn’t get to see all of my picks I did get to see a nice chunk of them, and I’d like to share my thoughts on them with you.

SEXY BABY

Sexy Baby” was the first film of the 2012 Tribeca Film Festival I had the pleasure of seeing and I have to say I thoroughly enjoyed it. The documentary follows three main subjects: 12 year old Winifred who is growing up in the Facebook generation with no guidance while her parents are facing a divorce, 22 year old Laura, an elementary school teacher getting labiaplasty due to a comment made to her by a guy about her labia being bigger than a porn stars, and former porn star Nichole who is dealing with finding her self again after being married, retiring from porn, and working on having a baby with her husband. It’s an eye-opening look at three different generations being affected by the over-sexed society we live in and adjusting to it in different ways. I would definitely recommend parents, students, and teachers alike see this film to get an idea of what the generations growing up now and the generations to come will be facing.

STRUCK BY LIGHTNING

Chris Colfer wrote and stars in this indie teen drama centering around a determined high school journalist who uses his peers, a multitude of different personalities ranging from the snobby teenager (Sarah Hyland), to a secretly gay popular male student (Carter Jenkins), to his one and only friend: a loner with a video camera (Rebel Wilson), to create a literary magazine in hopes of improving his chances of getting into Northwestern. In the process he changes their perspective on life as well as his own, especially as he overcomes some personal issues including his bumpy relationships with his divorced parents – a useless alcoholic mom (Allison Janney) and an estranged father (Dermot Mulroney). While the star-studded cast was definitely a draw for me, I have to say the film was good but not great. I will say though that I’m still definitely impressed with Chris Colfer for breaking out of what I thought would be his typecast role on ‘Glee‘.

FREE SAMPLES

Newcomer Jess Weixler stars in this coming of age dramedy about a young girl trying to figure out what the hell to do with her life. The film takes place over the course of one terrible day while Jillian (Weixler) gets stuck filling in for her best friend on a shady ice cream truck in the middle of nowhere with a dead cell phone and a raging hangover. The film was OK – but not something I was really thrilled with. I think if it had been stretched out over a longer period of time instead of one day, maybe if it were even one week, that it would have had more of an effect on me. The best part of the film are the small roles Jesse Eisenberg and Jason Ritter have in the film, both of whom are definitely the saving graces.

KNIFE FIGHT

Rob Lowe stars in this political semi-drama that feels more like a brutally honest documentary than anything else. Paul Turner (Lowe) is every politicians knight in shining armor. There isn’t a single campaign crisis he can’t fix for you, even if it involves risking a complete strangers life. I have to say that I LOVED this film. With another star-studded cast featuring Jamie Chung, Jennifer Morrison, Carrie-Anne Moss, Eric McCormack, and Julie Bowen this was probably my favorite film of the festival. Any movie that can make me both laugh and cry all while sitting on the edge of my seat anticipating the characters next moves is something I will fawn over forever, and “Knife Fight” definitely did all of that and more.

MANSOME

Another documentary covering how society has drastically changed in an age where we are all much more self-aware than our ancestors before us, this one focuses on the men for once. Will Arnett and Jason Bateman take us on a journey through all of the different physical struggles men in today’s society regarding keeping themselves well-groomed and facing identity issues when it comes to “being a man”. The documentary had us all asking, “What defines a man these days?” and taught us that the definition changes from one man to the next, very rarely being the same in each of them. Judd Apatow, Zach Galifianakis, Paul Rudd, and Adam Corolla contribute to this hilarious but honest look inside the man’s brain. An absolute must see for EVERYONE.

The films on my ‘hit list’ that I missed are as follows: “Any Day Now“, “Babygirl“, “Double of Nothing“, “Freaky Deaky“, “Jack and Diane“, “Lola Versus“, “Take This Waltz“, and “Your Sister’s Sister“. Hopefully they all make an appearance in a theater or on Netflix soon so I can check them out!

Lindsay Lohan on Glee? Wait, what?

27 Mar

Oh my God. I have no idea how I feel about this. At first I was enraged at the thought, but then I got excited and before I knew it ‘Rumors’ was playing on repeat and there was no going back.

Michael Ausiello, the king of TV news & exclusives, reports today that Lindsay Lohan is in talks (note: not confirmed) to guest on ‘Glee‘. As who? Well, you’ll have to read his exclusive here for that information.

UPDATE: Lindsay’s rep confirmed to JustJared that she will in fact be guest starring on the show. Woah.

I mean, if she’s gonna sing… I’m in. Lindsay Lohan’s short-lived music career was my second favorite part of her existence, the first obviously being ‘Mean Girls’. Plus I’m already really over ‘Glee‘ anyway so there isn’t much more they can do to make it any worse than it already is.

Enjoy this throwback jam with me:

The Trevor Project: Daniel Radcliffe’s PSA!

22 Feb

Last night during a very disturbing but hopefully eye-opening episode of ‘Glee‘ revolving around bullying and teen suicide a brand new PSA for The Trevor Project featuring Daniel Radcliffe aired.

The Trevor Project is a non-profit organization that specializes in the support of LGBTQ youth. They have a very large presence among social media thanks to Facebook and Twitter, as well as annual celebrity events in Los Angeles and New York to help raise funds and spread awareness. Thanks to their annual events I was made aware, as well as many others, and now they have the capability to use star power and reach out to millions more.

Not only will Daniel Radcliffe‘s Broadway and Harry Potter fan base alone reach out to millions of youth all over the world, but airing the PSA during ‘Glee‘ will help spread it among the youth who watch with siblings, parents, or other family and friends.

If you are being bullied, are depressed, or are having thoughts of suicide please call The Trevor Project: (866) 488-7386. It is strongly encouraged you save this number into your phone – you never know when you will need to talk to someone! No matter what is going on in your life at any time there is always someone out there who thinks you are worth listening to and saving – stranger or not.

GUEST BLOG: Damian McGinty at Forever 21 in LA!

15 Feb

I have thrown around the idea of letting friends guest blog since I started the site, so I am excited to share my good friend Melinda’s blog with you all! Huge thank you to Melinda for the write up as well as the exclusive pictures. I happen to love Damian (he was my ‘Glee Project’ favorite) so I’m happy to see him doing events! – LC

First off I would like to thank Lauren so much for giving me the chance to do a guest post. I LOVE LOVE LOVE her blog and enjoy reading about all of her fun celeb adventures. Just to preface this: I am not a Professional Fan Girl. I am just a lowly entertainment publicist in Los Angeles and I am blessed to have the chance to participate in lots of fun events from time to time.

This weekend I was invited to hang out at a publicist friend’s clients signing. I knew that it was Damian McGinty and that it would be at Forever 21, but didn’t really know anything else. When I arrived at Forever 21 at Hollywood & Highland, I knew immediately that this was going to be way bigger than I had thought. I have met Damian a few times at this point but I haven’t seen the newest season of ‘Glee‘, so I really had no idea what kind of fan base to expect.  There were 2 very long lines of excited fans that lined Hollywood Blvd outside of the store! Inside the store I found my friend and Damian at the signing area. In order for fans to be able to meet Damian they had to purchase $40 worth of Forever 21 merchandise and one of those items had to be from the new ‘Glee‘ line.

I stood around for a few minutes and out came the Fox crew, my friend, and Damian. They gave me an event pass so that I could take lots of photos for Damian and help with crowd control a little. Damian filmed a brief interview with Fox and then went outside to talk with the waiting fans. After that they started letting the first fans in to meet him, and they were all so gracious and excited.  Each fan got an autograph from Damian and could take a photo if they would like. After meeting Damian each fan was gifted an awesome “I’m A Gleek” slushy cup! Forever 21 traded their normal music for the ‘Glee‘ soundtracks and it was like one big dance party. Everyone was singing along and it was so fun!

It started drizzling outside so the amazing Forever 21 staff started hustling and helping fans take their photos so no one would have to stand in the rain. Being the amazing guy that he is Damian insisted that he get to meet all of the fans who had been waiting so they let the signing go for longer than originally intended. It was so great to see all of the fans so happy! Many of the fans brought gifts for him which was just too sweet and apparently people had even flown in to meet him. It was such a surreal experience to be a part of it all.

All in all, everyone had a terrific time singing, dancing and hanging out. I can’t wait to see what the future holds for Damian!

Kevin McHale visits ‘Live! with Kelly’ during chaos!

30 Jan

The scene outside of the ‘Live! with Kelly’ on the day Kevin McHale was a guest was beyond chaotic. There was a strong Gleek presence but, unfortunately, Kim Kardashian was also on the show that day which meant there were a ton of her fans (don’t worry, I can’t believe she has actual fans either) as well as paparazzi galore ready to pounce on any and every person who arrived and left. Oh, and Lucy Lawless was a guest that day as well. Random assortment, right?

When my friend Brian and I got there we missed everyone’s arrivals and security had already put up barricades so we picked a side and settled in for the wait. By the time Kevin’s car was pulled into the garage the crowd had multiplied and now not only were the barricades full, but the photographers and a couple groups of obnoxious fans who don’t know how to listen decided to wait outside of the barricades. At this point I figured it was going to be a complete fail because why would anyone want to walk out into that sort of chaos? Not only is it unsafe, but quite frankly if a crowd isn’t going to listen and follow rules then I don’t think they deserve to meet ANYONE. I know that it would have sucked for those of us who do listen, but still. And I will admit that right before Kevin McHale came out Brian and I decided to leave the barricade as well because we thought it was our only chance… but when the garage door opened and security brought Kevin McHale out they told us, basically: barricades or NOTHING. They even ushered him through the insane crowd to the barricades so that he couldn’t stop for anyone outside of them, which I thought was brilliant. Brian and I took our rightful space behind the girls that had intelligently stayed there and waited our turn.

Kevin was AWESOME. He took plenty of pictures and kept his cool even in the ridiculousness that was the crowd. I’ve included video so you can get a taste of what it was like. I blame Kim Kardashian for everything, just so we’re clear.

I am currently in a hate/love relationship with this Glee performance.

2 Dec

This mash-up is AMAZING. Actually amazing doesn’t cut it. It’s right up there with the Adele mash-up from two episodes ago. However there are a lot of things wrong with the visual – and I don’t mean the ladies sparkly dresses to which I would kindly like one in my size ASAP. I have to point some things out, but my fellow Gleeks please remember that I am in fact one of you as I tear this apart.

1.) First and foremost, who are all of these girls in the Treble Tones? Why would all of these girls come out of the woodwork to join the Treble Tones if New Directions has struggled for years now just to keep their member number at the bare minimum allowed to compete? This hasn’t even been explained to us, not to mention these random girls are never in Treble Tones meetings where Santana and Mercedes throw down every week. Ryan Murphy, I’m confused. Again. Who are these 8 mystery girls?

2.) In the previews following last weeks episode we got a glimpse of Sam ripping his pants off in what we are led to assume is a male strip club/show. Didn’t he move out of state? And if the moving out of state thing was a lie for him to get away with being a stripper in a nearby city, how is he suddenly in the same New Directions costume as Finn and Blaine? I am hoping this will be explained next week but given Glee’s history with inconsistencies and lack of realism I imagine it will happen in the first five minutes of the show and never be spoken of again. Didn’t Chord Overstreet quit, anyway? Wasn’t he off to do bigger and better things with his Glee-made 15 minutes? That worked out real well.

3.) Heather Morris looks terrible. She looked great last week so I’m going to assume it’s just the make up and the Snooki poof on top of her head, but I also feel that Brittany has been limited this season. She’s stuck in this storyline with Santana which is keeping her from being the best dancer on the show. Remember when Brittany and Other Asian (I still don’t know his character’s name!) used to dance their asses off every other episode or so and it never failed to impress us? I miss that. Yes she can sing and yes her comedic timing is perfection and yes she’s really pretty, but they are stripping her of what she does better than all the rest.

4.) At the 2:19 mark you can see the entire New Directions including Miss Pilsbury on their feet dancing to the Treble Tones. I know last week they touched on something about combining the two groups to make one super group for competing purposes, but I don’t see any New Directions on stage with them. Not even the girls. Finn’s fist bump with Blaine can be misconstrued to either him putting down the Treble Tones or him thinking they will be the reason the super-group that isn’t on stage wins. SO MANY QUESTIONS.

Okay, maybe that’s not a LOT of things.. but it’s enough. Enough to irritate someone who has been watching the show since the very beginning. I have to admit that I could not be more excited about the cast changing, even just slightly, come next season. I’m  bored. And Glee used to be fun, remember when Glee was fun? Now you’ve got to pay attention to all these storylines that lack depth and change so frequently it gives you a headache.

“The Submission” Closing Night!

31 Oct

Alright, I’m gonna admit this outright: I did not see The Submission during it’s short run in New York City. I’m sorry, theater lovers, feel free to throw extra dramatic shade my way. However I do enjoy Jonathan Groff, and Rutina Wesley, and even Eddie Kaye Thomas, so when Brian called and told me that it was closing night and I had a now or never chance to meet the cast – I chose now. I was very excited to meet Jonathan because, frankly, most of my friends had met him at this point and had all told me how enjoyable he was in person. They were not wrong! Jonathan was the first to come out after the show and he was incredibly sweet taking the time to not only sign autographs and take pictures but chat with each individual fan that had waited for him. I found that pretty endearing because there was a pretty decent sized crowd awaiting him when he came outside, and even some of the nicest celebrities are very cut and dry about greeting fans, taking a picture, and moving onto the next to cut time. I approve, JGroff.

Eddie Kaye Thomas snuck out after him and though I caught a glimpse of him it wasn’t enough time to stop him for a picture, but I did manage to meet Rutina Wesley as well who was nice but definitely seemed tired and ready to go home. She is much tinier in person than I imagined her to be! I guess because I’m so used to seeing her on True Blood… which, who knows if we will again… ahem. No spoilers for those who may need to catch up!

Huge thank you Brian for not only taking my pictures (my battery was dead, huge fangirl no-no!) and taking the time to send me the pictures afterward. You’ll never get those two minutes back and for that I am eternally grateful. (Or something.)
